Take Your Maturing Business Beyond Achy Joints and Hot Flashes
In today’s blog, I bring you a business growth lesson inspired by the throes of midlife. Intrigued? Here’s the deal.
Middle age, for me, has turned out to be a demanding but wise teacher. One of her keenest lessons has been around stress management. To make a long story short, lack of balance and flying by the seat of my pants doesn’t work anymore.
In earlier decades, I could procrastinate, catch up on things late at night, exercise sporadically, enjoy coffee most of the day, and sleep soundly when I finally went to bed.
In midlife, stress ratchets up quickly when I don’t sleep enough, don’t do some strenuous short-term exercise, don’t get enough steps in, don’t eat enough protein, don’t limit my coffee to morning, or don’t build intentional relaxation time into my life. Once I become stressed, it affects me physically and takes me much longer to recover after I mend my ways.
What does all this have to do with growing a business?
Lately, I’ve been talking to several veteran business owners who have pointed out “middle-aged” signs and symptoms in their businesses!
The company has a richer story of its successful innovation and evolution that would make the benefits of choosing its products even more compelling to the target audience, but the website hasn’t been updated to showcase it.
They’ve added new technology, features, and partnerships that offer more value to customers and need to spread the word.
New staff members have added depth, breadth, additional services and conveniences clients will want to take advantage of, but they’re not sure how to let everyone know.
The business owner’s expertise and experience have grown greatly, so the value proposition needs to be revised and upgraded to reflect a higher level of service that will appeal to more discriminating, bigger-ticket clients they can now serve successfully.
If your business has reached a higher level of maturity and you’re still scraping by on the seat-of-your-pants solutions that sufficed when you first hung out your shingle, it’s time to heed the call of advancing age and give it what it needs to thrive!
Fall is the perfect time to stop trying to coast by on what worked in your early days. It’ll allow you to deliver strong results during this season of transition and set up your business to be firing on all cylinders by the time we enter the busy holiday season.
The longer you wait, the longer it’ll be until you can experience the benefits of choosing well today. So get after it!
